Solar Plexus Chakra: Heart Heroes

Solar Plexus Chakra: Heart Heroes

In Sanskrit, the solar plexus chakra is called the Manipura Chakra, which translates as the city of jewels or lustrous gems. When energy flows through the third chakra, individuals may experience heightened self-expression and increased self-confidence. This helps people feel motivated and have a deeper understanding of their purpose in life.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is a fire element meaning the energy comes from the sun. The saying “ignite a fire in my stomach” stems from the Solar Plexus and its location around the stomach area.

Feeling a balanced Solar Plexus Chakra ignites the light of consciousness that motivates and drives us toward our goals. However, if it is activated too much, we start to feel burnt out. We can minimize the feelings of burnout by being intentional towards your work/life balance and your individual rhythm of your personal rest, play work balance. It is taking precious time to spend quality time with yourself and taking the time to be productive towards the activities that can help you to achieve your goals.

By gently observing the times you are feeling your best, or in “flow state” you can begin to identify your best personal rest, play and work balance!

Did you know concepts of the seven chakras came to the Western world in the 1880s from tantric yoga traditions and are increasingly studied and practiced due to the extensive benefits.

How to Discover if Your Solar Plexus Chakra is Out of Balance

As we touched on earlier, the feeling of burnout is an opportunity to check in with your Solar Plexus Chakra. This is an invitation to listen to your mind, body & spirit as to what will be most restorative for your Solar Plexus Chakra.

Since the Solar Plexus Chakra is a fire element, there is an intensity to this energy center in the body and when left on overdrive it can shift our balance to over stimulation which can cause us to react with over-dominating actions or become overly aggressive, or irritated. When our beautiful energy centers are blocked, we sense this with all of our subtle bodies. Blocked chakras serve as a reminder to us to check in with ourselves and to take the time to give our mind, body and spirit what it is craving.

Signs of an Out of Balance Solar Plexus Chakra: Mentally

  • Aggression
  • Dominating others in an unhealthy manner
  • Negative thought patterns
  • Lack of trust
  • Insecurity

Signs of an Out of Balance Solar Plexus Chakra: Physically

The physical manifestations of a blocked Solar Plexus Chakra can cause digestive issues, which a lack of proper nutrients can also cause. With the Solar Plexus Chakra located in our stomach area, we must be mindful of the foods and beverages we put into our bodies.

  • Digestive Issues
  • Stomach Ulcers
  • Fatigue
  • IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
  • Constipation

Signs of an Out of Balance Solar Plexus Chakra: Emotionally

The imbalance of a Solar Plexus Chakra can lead us to unhealthy habits and attachments to the people in our life. We may feel low self-esteem and confidence, leading us to seek approval from others and rely on someone outside of ourselves to fulfill our needs. Other emotional symptoms can include:

  • Self-Doubt
  • Trust Issues
  • The constant worry of what others may think about you
  • Creating unhealthy relationships with people in your life

yoga poses

Yoga Poses

Here are three effective yoga poses that will assist healthy alignment through the solar plexus:

  • Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Fold) -

Sit with your legs together or hip-width apart and straight in front of you. Make sure you are sitting high up on your sitting bones. Inhale and reach with both arms toward the ceiling, arms parallel to your ears. As you exhale, keep reaching forward, and bend forward, reaching with your hands toward your toes. Bring your nose to your knees. If you are unable to reach your toes, hold your ankles, shins, or even your knees. Rest your elbows on the floor.
  • Seated Spinal Twist

    - Begin sitting upright on the mat. Bend one leg, and cross it over the other so that the foot on the bent leg is flat on the floor. Then, bend the underneath leg. Reach the arm on the same side as your top leg behind you, and plant the hand on the ground. Hook the other arm behind your bent leg and hold for a few breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose) -

Stand straight with your legs hip-distance apart and arms on your sides. Now, spread your legs wide apart. Turn your left foot out to face the left side of the mat. The other foot will turn inward to make a 45 Degree angle. Twist your body to the left completely. Go forward on your left knee, making a 90 Degree angle; make sure that your knee doesn’t cross over the toe. Let the other leg stretch properly. Now go into a Namaste position, and take our arms above your head, look up, arch your back a bit and stretch. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat on the other side.

Meditations & Mudras

Meditations & Mudras

When we feel the fire in our belly to begin to get into overdrive in our daily tasks, it is best to take time in quietness and stillness. The mudra for the Solar Plexus is called The Rudra Mudra. This mudra brings forth the power of Shiva, the Hindu god of all yogis, for the solar plexus chakra that’s all about self-confidence. To perform this mudra:

Place your palms face-up on your thighs. Touch the tips of the thumbs, index fingers, and ring fingers together, straightening through the pinky and middle fingers. Calling out the mantra “R-A-A-A-A-M” with each exhale, envision in your mind the fire from the Solar Plexus Chakra burning everything you have been holding onto from your past and letting it go as you welcome new beginnings and positive energy flow into your mind, body, and spirit.

Using Your Other Senses to Balance the Solar Plexus Chakra

Using Your Other Senses to Balance the Solar Plexus Chakra

The color of the Solar Plexus Chakra is yellow. As the primary energy source for the Solar Plexus Chakra comes from the Sun, there is no better way to reclaim its natural energy than by going outside in the Sun. 10 minutes in the Sun can give us a boost of energy as well as Vitamin D. Besides getting soaked up in the Sun, you can:

  • Eat yellow foods such as squash, bananas, lemon and ginger, pineapple, and corn
  • Spend time around a campfire on a cool night
  • Burn fiery incense and essential oils such as saffron, musk, sandalwood, ginger, and cinnamon
  • Practice “Breath of Fire” breathing when practicing yoga or in meditation
