Heart Chakra: HeartMath Institute

 Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra is the ruler of the Lymphatic System (a network of vessels through which lymph drains from the tissues into the blood). The Heart Chakra, also known as Anahata, is the fourth primary chakra in our body, located in the center of the chest next to the heart. It serves as our center of love for oneself and others, compassion, empathy, and forgiveness. A blocked Heart Chakra can make it hard for you to develop and keep healthy relationships.

Have a balanced Heart Chakra and attract the love this world has for you. When the Heart Chakra is in healthy alignment, you will feel the energy of love, compassion, and joy surrounding you. You will feel open to life’s experiences and more relaxed, passionately, and vulnerably in your healthy relationships.

If you have an overactive Heart Chakra, you tend to drop your boundaries as a way to please others, leaving your needs unfulfilled. When your Heart Chakra is underactive, you may feel jaded about love and focus on the selfishness of others.

Did you know Anahata is a bridge between the lower and upper chakras integrating the manifest with the spiritual? Anahata is an air element; like love, it is all around us to enjoy. We can embody this chakra by keeping our love free flowing like air; this will help keep the chakra open.

How to discover if your Heart Chakra is Out of Balance?

Blocked chakras can have a profound effect on our mental and physical well-being. Having a blocked Heart Chakra can make us feel ashamed of being vulnerable and bring tightness to our chest when dealing with stress-related problems. You may notice yourself being co-dependent and manipulative in relationships. The best practice during hard times is self-care, especially for the chakra representing love.

How to discover if your Heart Chakra is Out of Balance

A blocked Heart Chakra can leave you feeling guarded and putting up walls around those you love. Feeling this way can lead you to lose passion for your significant other. You want to feel free and safe when expressing yourself emotionally, but a blocked Heart Chakra can prevent you from embodying your emotions. You may also find yourself in problematic situations such as:

  • Feeling lonely
  • Isolating yourself excessively
  • Feeling overly defensive
  • Holding grudges against people you love

The physical consequences of a blocked Heart Chakra can lead to scary moments if not taken care of. The heart chakra affects the heart, lungs, chest, arms, and hands. A blocked Heart Chakra can manifest:

  • Poor blood circulation
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Tightness in your chest
  • Infections in the lungs

As the Heart Chakra is the bridge between the upper and lower chakras, not taking care of your Heart Chakra can disrupt the energy circulating throughout your body. You may start to feel disconnected from your spiritual path. You may often feel disassociated from:

  • Experiencing life
  • Not feeling open to accepting lessons
  • Not feeling loved and shaming your inner child
  • Not trusting your inner voice

Balancing Your Heart Chakra

Show others and yourself love and kindness. A simple way to unblock your Heart Chakra can be practicing gratitude - Each morning, write down three things you are grateful for and why in a journal. Maybe send a close friend or relative a gratitude text expressing why you are thankful to have them in your life. For yourself, you can also:

Stating Heart Opening Affirmations

  • I am full of love
  • I am worthy and deserving of the love I desire
  • I release and let go of all resentment
  • I love myself unconditionally
  • My heart radiates loving energy

Yoga Poses

  • Cat Cow - A great way to create space in your chest and upper back. From the tabletop position, inhale with a flat back. As you exhale, lengthen the tailbone downwards, tilting the hips forwards, rounding the spine, and dropping the head. On the inhalation, extend the hips back and up slightly as the belly dips down and lifts the head. Move through this pose with a few breaths.
  • Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) - Another chest opener that strengthens the back muscles, improves the spine’s suppleness, and opens across the chest, broadening the collar bones. When practicing this pose, do not force your body into the stretch. You want to envision extending through the crown of your head before gently raising the upper body and opening across the heart space.
  • Hug Yourself - It is not a traditional yoga pose but wrap your arms around yourself and squeeze with the intent of being there for yourself and showing yourself love.

Meditations & Mudras

The mudra for the Heart Chakra is called the Padma Mudra. It is meant to bring new possibilities and invite love into your heart. To practice this mudra in your next heart-filled meditation:

With your palms at your heart, touch the outer edges of both pinky fingers and thumbs together. Keep the heels of the palms pressed together as you blossom open through your hands. Extend through the tips of all ten fingers. The mudra chant for this chakra is “Y-A-A-A-A-M.” With each inhalation, imagine breathing in all the love around you into your body. With each exhalation, imagine you are releasing love back into the world. This is the recirculation of energy that you are giving back to the Universe, and the Universe is bringing you.

Using Your Other Senses to Balance Your Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra is associated with the color green, which translates to transformation and love energy. Nourishing your body with nutrient-rich foods is an excellent way to get your body feeling good. Making your green smoothie in the morning will take it further because you create a healthy meal for your body. You can also use your other senses, such as:

Nutrient Rich Foods

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Kiwi
  • Green Apple
  • Broccoli
  • Peas
  • Avocado
  • Green Bell Pepper

Burning Incense and Essential Oils

  • Rose
  • Lavender
  • Sandalwood
  • Orange
  • Jasmine

Stones and Crystals

  • Rose Quartz
  • Jade
  • Green Calcite
  • Green Tourmaline
  • Green Aventurine

Practicing self-care to show how much you appreciate yourself can create the opportunity to make yourself a priority by taking yourself out for a meal or setting aside quality time for yourself. Above all else, knowing how to fulfill your happiness can help align other chakras too! Do whatever it is that makes you smile and feel wholesome.
